Scrittrici Italiane del Risorgimento: Una Presenza Rimossa
Abstract
My article aims to investigate the presence, or better the presumed absence, of women writers during the Italian Risorgimento. Next to great male literary figures like Foscolo, Manzoni, Nievo, Massimo D’Azeglio, only to cite a few famous writers of the time, the traditional historiography of Risorgimento has chosen to celebrate only the figures of the so called ‘donneillustri’, the exemplary mothers and wives of the heroic male protagonists. New researches, mainly supported by the relatively new development of Women’s Studies in Italy, have highlighted the strong presence of an elite of women, strongly supporting the unification and independence of Italy. Following a general introduction to women’s deterrents to an active role in politics and literature, my article will touch upon the work of the best representative woman writer and political journalist of the time, Cristina di Belgiojoso.
